You will need to review the event in nDepth and choose the correct field to populate the $User field in the e-mail template.
For example, if you're looking at NewGroupMember events you will likely want to use NewGroupMember.SourceAccount instead of NewGroupMember.DestinationAccount for the $User parameter in your e-mail.
