Hey, this may not be useful but just a shot in the dark but have you gone into the properties of the folder you created, clicked the sharing tab and confirmed that it is indeed being shared out? That will also verify that you are using the correct path.
For the username format: domainname\username, are you using the full domain name as in: "example.com\example user"?
